Hello. I am a choral/orchestra teacher at a TItle I school, Coronado High School. when I began teaching here five years ago, there were 15 students in one choir, 23 students in an orchestra and one small guitar class. Now, I have two sections of guitar, a large orchestra, and three choirs.

We would really appreciate your help and are encouraged by this opportunity to ask for instruments through your program.

My Music Program offers Band, Choir, and Guitar for Junior High students in the Roosevelt School District in South Phoenix, an area known for it's student population high with minorities and poverty. My school district can provide band instruments but my school has no acoustic nylon string guitars. I have been a professional guitarist and want to offer guitar studies to my students. When I offered the possibility of a guitar class to my students, I had an overwhelming response from my students to sign up......but my school has no guitars. A few students have their own guitars but their are not nearly enough for all the students to study with......please help.

It is hard to be a 13-year-old these days! Unfortunately the K-8 where I am employed does not have the resources to offer many of the exploratory classes that these 12 and 13-year-olds would get at a junior high. Guitar is a chance for my students to reach out and be successful in a new way.

I am blessed to have hard working students, but I cannot deny that our school is high poverty and has a high percentage of English language learners. It is infeasible to ask parents to provide "non-essentials," and so I only have 15 acoustic guitars to teach classes of 25-32 students. I see 1/4 of a grade level per quarter and, therefore, a class set of instruments really does impact every student available. I am especially proud that over the past year NOT ONE of our instruments has been broken (aside from a string or two). I think that the care and love that my students show for the instruments they have proves how deserving they are of individual resources.

I am requesting 3 acoustic guitars to reinforce a thriving guitar program. Most of my students start the class having never touched a guitar. While playing Mary Had a Little Lamb might not seem like an achievement to an adult, reading and playing that song for my students' "Level 1" test is a life affirming boost! The students are in mixed ability groupings when they come to Music and I have seen the "low-achiever," the "Naughty kid" and the "A-plus student" achieve at the same rate because music and guitar are such a new experience. Additionally, the students' ability to learn can only increase as we obtain enough supplies to eliminate sharing. Not only will they be able to play the same thing at the same time, but they will increase their own responsibility by being charged with a whole new set of treasures to care for.

Music class is a place where each and every child has the opportunity to be successful, no matter their birth language or income tax bracket. Please help me to how my students that hard work matters!Read more »

The students at Bernard Black Elementary have a lot of musical interest and untapped potential!! I have been able to get them excited about music with bringing out and experimenting with the limited instruments that I currently have access. They beg each music class to play instruments, especially the guitars, and I do not have enough to go around even in small groups. The donation of guitars would be utilized by the whole school since I see all students, grades K-8, in my music program. The students are very respectful of the instruments that are available and appreciative of the opportunity to try them out and learn more about each one! Teen Central at Burton Barr Library is an after school destination for many inner city kids who have no where to go until their parents get off of work. Kids can come and go freely, use computers, hang out, play video games and watch movies. One of the more popular programs in the room is the music program.
Students can 'check out' a musical instrument to work with in the teen room at any time. They can try out different instruments without fear of purchase and can practice any time they come into the room. Twice per month, students can participate in live jam sessions when we put all of the instruments out on the floor. We have had several requests from students to get a classical guitar so that they can practice. We would also like a set of bongos or other type of hand drums and a small harp or mandolin.
We really feel like these additions would make a more complete and rounded program and give our students the opportunity to learn about new and exciting musical instruments. Read more »
