Phoenix, AZ - Wednesday, February 3, the Phoenix Fire Department will launch its year-long partnership with Ear Candy to conduct 4 musical instrument drives for the public schools. The first instrument drive will be for the Roosevelt School District, and all 57 Fire House locations throughout the City will serve as donation sites.
Fire Station #4 will be hosting this kick-off event with a 55 piece marching band from Valley View School, which is located in the Roosevelt School District. In preparing for this event, Band director Eddie Gaona said, "this a tremendous opportunity for the community to support music in our schools. Our kids are excited to perform!"
Speakers will include Nate Anderson (Founder, President, and CEO of Ear Candy), Frank Solomon (Deputy Assistant Chief, Phoenix Fire Department), Dr. Jacqueline Jackson, (Associate Superintendent for Teaching and Learning, Roosevelt School District), and Ms. Betty Ware (Governing Board Clerk, Roosevelt School District Governing Board of Education).
Ear Candy is a Phoenix-based non-profit organization devoted to providing children access to music education. To date, they have helped thousands of students by supporting in-school music programs through instrument donations, creating after school programs with community partners, and offering unique Beyond-the-Classroom opportunities.
The Phoenix Fire Department wants to be engaged in the community. Because of the current budget crisis, music programs get cut first by most school districts. So the Fire Department is helping to keep music alive in the schools by assisting Roosevelt (which has a vibrant music program--including instrumental bands and choral groups).
